Esports Entertainment Group (EEG) has appointed Robert Soper, founder of Sun Gaming & Hospitality, to its board of directors.

A highly experienced executive, Soper has led Sun Gaming & Hospitality as President and CEO since the company’s inception in April 2017.

The company provides advisory services to resort operators, investors, regulators, private equity funds, banks and developers.

Soper previously served as president and CEO of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority. He was also international president of Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment.

Earlier in his career, Soper spent nearly 14 years at Mohegan Sun, including serving as president and CEO of facilities in Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Here he oversaw the introduction of online gambling within the organization.

“I am honored to welcome Robert, a highly respected and widely recognized leader in the resort and gaming industry, to our Board of Directors,” said Alex Igelman, CEO of EEG. “He brings an impressive track record and deep relationships across the industry that I believe will add tremendous value to our company as we execute our strategic turnaround.

“His willingness to join our board demonstrates his confidence in the company’s ongoing transformation and our significant potential in igaming and esports.”

EEG people move

The appointment comes after EEG also announced the return of Damian Mathews as chief operating officer earlier this month.

Mathews was previously CFO of EEG from April 2022 to December 2022 and also served as COO for several months.

He resigned from both positions in December, but remained a member of the EEG board, a position he has held since June 2020.
